Addressing Adolescent Anorexia


50% of girls between the ages of 13 and 15 believe that they are overweight

90% of people with anorexia are female

Anorexia Nervosa has the HIGHEST death rate of any mental illness

Anorexia is the THIRD most common chronic illness among adolescents.


Biological: Genetically predisposed

Psychological: many people with Anorexia are perfectionists and/or have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Environmental: most models are abnormally skinny and that becomes the goal for teenage girls

    I really like how you included that image at the end depicting body distortion. A lot of people don’t realize that people with an eating disorder look in the mirror and see someone entirely different from their own being. Thanks for diving deeper into the subject

      Thank you! A huge part of anorexia is seeing yourself differently than everyone else sees you. The girl in the photo clearly sees her image differently than the way she really looks.

    This is a really great project, Rebecca! I really like how you played out the information and I can tell you put a lot of effort into the project. The statistic you chose to include are really powerful and help me to comprehend the severity of the problem. I also like the photo you included and it reminds me of some the photos we have seen by different photographers in our GOA that depict different disorders.
