I was scared. I was alone.
I was always afraid I’d behaved out of line or was wrong.
And I know what they want.
And I know from the past that I can’t stand the pressure for long.
But I know who I am,
And I know who to be.
Being here. Being now. Being free. Being Me.
And it’s all, all that I wanna be,
And it’s all that I ever need: being me.
If you’re scared, if you’re alone,
If you think you’re unwanted
Then know that you’re not there alone.
If they say what they want,
And you know that you don’t want to do what they’re saying at all,
You should know who you are,
And should know who to be.
Being here. Being now. Being true. Being you.
And it’s all, all that you gotta do.
Just live and keep being you.
Just be you.
Why I Chose This Topic
How I Produced The Song
We all act differently around different people. Different groups of people have different interests and most of the time, the majority opinion rules in a group. This is extremely obvious when we think about how we act with family and how we act with friends. You do things with your friends you would never dream of doing with your parents. This isn’t a new idea. Humans have influenced each other for our entire existence, but why has peer pressure become such a prevalent topic in schools in the past few decades? One answer is social media. Humans have always served to please each other, but now it is easily recordable. We get a sense of success or belonging when we get likes on a post and how popular you are is open for the world to see. Suddenly you can’t get a job anymore because somebody else had more positive comments online. Other people’s opinions affect our actions. They always have and they always will. I’m not saying we should abolish social media or stop hanging out with friends. I’m not trying to challenge these strange societal norms on a large scale, but rather say that these societal norms are not in any way normal. The next time somebody insults your clothes or asks you to do something you don’t want to, don’t be afraid to ignore them or just say no. Don’t feel the need to please others at the expense of your own pleasure. “Be yourself,” I must admit, is a vague and overused term. Instead, consider whether or not you will later be pleased by your actions. Don’t be someone else.
Here is an inspirational video created by user Mateusz M in 2013. Youtube and other social media is filled with inspirational videos similar to this one. It seems social media is now reacting to what itself has partially caused. Ironically, people see these videos and decide they need to make one themself. I suppose in this presentation I am just following the path of others around me.
JUST BE YOU
